Swimming:
Lake St. George State Park: There is a lifeguard-staffed beach at Lake St. George State Park in nearby Liberty. This state park is nestled on land abutting the beautifully clean and crystal clear spring fed water of Lake St. George. The park has a new playground and numerous picnic tables and hibachi grills for your lunchtime picnic. The park also offers canoe, paddleboat, rowboat, and kayak rentals for a minimal fee. Across the street from the park is a vast wilderness that stretches for acres. There are hiking trails where wildlife can be spotted. Swimming is one of the park’s main attractions. There is a designated swimming area which is lifeguard-staffed from mid-June through the end of August. Fish in the lake include salmon, trout, and bass. Day-use fees are $7.00/person for non-Maine residents. Address: 278 Belfast Augusta Rd, Liberty, ME 04949; phone: 207-589-4255.
Marshall Shore Town Park: This is where the locals go to swim in Lake St. George! The town of Liberty maintains this park, which has a small picnic and swimming area with toilet facilities. Huge slabs of granite make an unusual flat, hard shoreline perfect for sunbathers and waders. Where the water meets the smooth rock shelf, the granite runs under the water for several feet, looking like an elaborate sculpted pool. A sample of the rock, analyzed in the laboratory, was dated at 422 million years old! You can see surface marks on the rock left by the continental glacier. These marks are about 14,000 years old and show the direction the ice was moving, in this case almost due South (177 to 179 degrees). No fees. Address: Marshall Shores Rd, Liberty, ME
White Water Rafting: Maine has more miles of white water rafting than all the rest of New England and New York combined. They offer day trips of whitewater rafting and float tubing.
